Navigation Primary School

6 03 2007

Last week members of the Student Council visited Navigation Primary school which was rebuilt in 2005.

Feature which impressed us were:

  • lighting which automatically turned on and off when people entered or left rooms
  • a ventilation system which automatically refreshes the air after each lesson
  • microphones and speakers for teachers in each classroom
  • wide corridors
  • good use of natural light

  • a sprung floor in the gym
  • solar panels on the roof
  • sound proof classrooms
  • rooms which have been designed with community access in mind
  • the way in which pedestrians are kept away from cars
  • a welcoming and secure entrance

i think the school should be on one level so that people who are on crutches can get around easily

Peter, any new building with more than one level must have a lift in.

Mr. Mayland I agree that a lift shall be required. Also we need a common room for each year.

Yes, a common room for each year is definitely something which should be considered.

I think we should have an eviromentally friendly building and also allow members of the public like sports teams to use our pitches and facilities

Wide corridors might sound like a minor thing, but at the moment, there are always big crushes in our narrow corridors in between lessons.

I dont think one storey will be possible as the building “footprint” would take up too much land, but I do like the idea of a central chapel and radiating “houses” which can have both learning and social spaces in them.

I am sure that wide corridors, or better still - almost no corridors and light airy spaces is a must.

Joshua Peers, I also agree with you as well!

Mr Gwyer (14:34:04) :

Particularly like ideas about automatic lights and air refreshing as at this time of year it seems particularly wasteful to have lights left on around the school and rooms do get quite stuffy. Not sure teachers need microphones for use in normal classrooms but perhaps other colleagues would disagree.
